Many are used to divide rooms, creating a more efficient use of the space within the room.
You may want to try then as decorators or accent pieces to add character to a room space. Other options is to use them to hide areas of different usage, such as a laundry room or play area.

Folding Screen Partitions

The room divider you purchase will depend on your usage for instance a permanent on can be used for wine shelves in a restaurant, while others can be built in as in sliding partitions in a office, and lastly the portable ones have been used in convention centers. The amount of privacy can be a complete or partial depending on the screen itself.

Folding Room Partition

The good thing about privacy screens is that they are practical devices that can be used in the home or the backyard. so its important to understand that the main function of a privacy screen is to provide some degree of privacy when required.

That is why most people have used them to place in the corner of a bedroom to create a private dressing area, or in a large rectangular room as a room divider. Now for the backyard a garden privacy screen can also help block the view of neighbors or people passing by the property.

China Folding Screens

To understand the history the earliest folding screens originated in China as early as the fourth century BC. Its use became widespread around the 7th century in Tang Dynasty of China. Room dividers which were used by interior designers and architects mostly to divide space into separate distinct areas.

After careful research I noticed that there is different types of room dividers, one of which is the cubicle partition, the pipe and drape screens, and the shoji screens. A creative option would be to use plants, shelves or railings as dividers. Portable room dividers have become popular due to the folded wall panels supported on wheels making it easier to use indoors or outdoors.

Bedroom Room Divider

The easy thing about building a simple privacy screen for the bedroom is that all you will need is three rectangular panels, crown molding, batting, a fabric cover, stapler, and a nail gun. Then you will need to take six sets of hinges to secure the three panels together, you want the partition to stand on its own the best way to do this is to buy sheets of plywood from a lumberyard or building supply store. Next get sheets that are thick enough to stand upright.

Privacy Screen for the Bedroom

The other part of the project is to cut each of the three panels to the exact height you want for your dressing screen, do not make it too high if you want to look over the top of it. You can also have a simple scalloped look to the top of each panel. Then cover each panel with batting while stapling into place so as to add a touch of softness to the privacy screen. Next cover the batting with material so you can staple the fabric into position. A nice touch would be to use the crown molding around the edge of each panel while securing it into place with the nail gun.

Picture hanging ideas

Most commonly used in the residence is a small room divider, sometimes called a folding shoji screen. How they work is a Shoji screens are usually tri-fold walls. A shoji screen may also be used to section off part of a bedroom or family room as an office.

Picture frame hanging

Use a room divider to divide the space more effectively or as a decorating focus point. Some things that have been used to create distinct spaces in apartments as well as homes include: Plants, bookshelves, railings, fireplaces, light fixtures, and drapes.

Home interior decorating

In schools room dividers are used to create temporary classrooms for education in large open spaces, the most common type of room divider is a portable room divider on casters which can easily be moved from place to place. The great thing about this is that after class, the room divider can be rolled back into its storage area for future use.

Outdoor Privacy Screens

You will notice that once the three panels are completed it will be necessary to attach them the hinge sets.both on the left and right sides of the middle panel, when attaching the other panels to the hinges on each side make sure the hinges are secure. The best thing to do for a outdoor privacy screen is to use multiple panels or create one long panel that is attached to your fence.

One recommendation is to purchase lattice panels and meld them into a single large panel it is easily done by making the frame from two by fours. So it will have more of a finished look frame up both sides of the large panel.

If you want it to match the fence spray paint the panel first then attach it using heavy bolts. This will enhance the vines and plants under the screen panel. The best part is that as vine grows they will weave up in the holes in the latticework which will make for a attractive outdoor privacy screen. It is important to take into account the location where you want the privacy screen to be positioned.Such as on a veranda, living room or bedroom. Most privacy screens are designed to be folding screens for hiding the view inside or outside your house.

Typically the one you make should have up to four panels but you can add as many panels as you need. To find out how big of area the screen will cover take a measuring tape for the length you want to ensure you keep the purchase of materials in producing a DIY screen. Next decide if you want to build the screen or use prefabricated ones that are easy to assemble and set up at home.

How To Build a Room Divider

Commercial building using space dividers

As you may have noticed hotels and restaurants use two different types of room dividers. The first is a floor-to-ceiling room divider in banquet halls and meeting spaces. This makes it easier to divide a banquet room into smaller facilities.

Other areas would be that hotels and restaurants may use portable room dividers similar to those used in schools.

When it comes to office room dividers they are usually more permanent and attached directly to the floor. The benefits is that these office cubicles room dividers allow you to take a large office space and break it into smaller subdivided offices.

Large facilities such as convention centers they have a wide open space that need to be separated into smaller areas. You can use some photo display dividers for your bedroom or living area to provide the same type of privacy and sectioning off big areas.

How to maked a Room Divider Partition

Some things you should know before you decide to do it yourself and build your own room divider is that the folding screen room divider consists of 3 or more panels attached to each other along their long edges with hinges. Also when it comes to the panels they can be adjusted and balanced in panels used with plywood or closet doors.

Using Plywood

I would recommend that if you are using plywood make sure you buy smooth plywood that is at least 3/8 inch thick or thicker. Simply because 1/4 inch will probably be too thin and may warp. People like plywood because of the advantage of it being easy to cut in a decorative manner. Next you will want to choose how high you want them to be the reason for this is due to the fact that the taller the screen is, the more panels or length you may need in-order to keep it stable. It is recommended to have at least a height of 6 feet for complete privacy.

Decorative Finish

You may also want to apply the decorative finish to your panels before you install the hinges. Some tips on a quick way to finish them would be with painting the panels, applying wallpaper as well as stapling or nailing the fabric to the panels. Then lay them on a big enough floor space side by side with long edges touching in order to attach the hinges. It is recommended that you alternate the direction the hinges bend so that the screen can fold in a variable angled pattern, even if you decide to use cabinet hinges, piano hinges are best to keep them from torquing out of shape.

It is best to have some extra hands to help you with standing the screen upright, this will help keep the screen from falling over so you want to move the panels in a variable angle direction so that it will support itself. Next go to your local hardware store to select some straight, flat 1x12 inches to 8 foot pine boards, you can have the store you buy it from cut these boards for you. This is so that by having them cut to it will give you equal pieces.

Primer Paint

The fun part is when you select a primer or paint, here you can try faux painting techniques to keep the wood with nice characteristics use stain or a clear coat. You may also need to pick up some medium grit sand paper along with 8 Hinges such as brass or brass plated. So its nice when you start to sand, prime, plus paint each piece then allow ample drying time. Then flip the two connected boards and add another board until you have all your boards connected. It has been recommended to do this with 5 to 7 pieces. You can also use some rubber tape to keep this item from scraping your floors

Some other ideas is to take pieces of wood, then measure down 10 to 12 inches from top to bottom. Then make sure to mark on the wood with a pencil in areas of the hinges with screws. It will be necessary to screw them into the wood with an electric drill or screwdriver so allow space between boards so that the hinges do not bind.

Great tips. We used one of those photo room dividers to block the entry to our upstairs, so our cats couldn't go up there. A friend used one of the white fiber-like screens to place in front of her apartment windows. That way she didn't have to hang curtains or blinds, still had privacy, and when she wanted to look out, could just move the screen.
