Bullet Proof Vests Laws

The use of body armor is for those engaged in enforcement activities such as in military or law enforcement, laws against those who have been convicted of a crime prevent them from purchasing or possessing body armor.

When it comes to civilian body armor laws, for adults who are law abiding citizens and have a purpose for wearing protective safety clothing they are not under those restrictions. In the state of Connecticut only police and military are permitted to purchase items and new legislation to restrict sales to civilians in places like New York are being developed.

Bulletproof Vests History

Various types of materials have been used in history for protecting the body from injury due to combat or other high risk situations. Starting with wooden shields and metal shields which lead to suits of armor and with the invention of firearms all previous means of armor became ineffective.

The medieval Japanese introduced soft body armor which was manufactured from silk, but these only provided protection against low velocity bullets.

The advancement of handgun ammunition made this concept unacceptable. U.S. Patent trademark of bullet proof vests and body armor type garments were used by law enforcement dating back to 1931, then came the world war II flak jacket an anti ballistic nylon vest that was ineffective against pistol and rifle threats.

Next came lightweight body armor in the 1960's new fibers were discovered that could be woven into lightweight fabric that offered ballistic resistant properties.

The invention of Dupont Kevlar ballistic high performance fabric in 1970 became the standard for defined requirements set by the National Institute of Justice.

Armor Vest Protection

Some facts you should know about body armor used as everyday wear is that the threat level or protection level should be clearly labeled and the purpose of the concealable protection vest is to protect against handguns and unexpected assaults.

Soft body armor catches the bullet inside a interwoven web of fabric which in turn absorbs the energy of the impact and disperses it, in order to stop fragments, knives and ice picks you will want to choose a vest that has multiple threat protection. because new weapons and ammunition needs to be checked against current technology when deciding on what protection vest or body armor to buy.

Tactical Body Armor

Most ballistic helmets and entry vests are used by police and military personnel. The type of armor that you can expect would be ballistic IIIA helmets, entry vests which include full tactical entry, light duty assault, overt protection. Hard armor as in rifle plates, ballistic visor and face shields to protect against riot fragmentation. Other types of tactical shields include deliberate or hasty entry.

Bulletproof Vests Dragon Skin

If you are not aware of Dragon Skin it is a type of technologically advanced ballistic vest made by Pinnacle Armor. The vests are characterised by two-inch-wide circular discs that overlap like scale armor, creating a flexible vest that allows a good range of motion and can absorb a high number of bullets compared with other military body armor.

It has been reported that the discs are composed of silicon carbide ceramic matrices and laminates, much like the larger ceramic plates in other types of bullet resistant vests with a flexible trauma plate.

Bullet proof vest carriers

Quality tactical vests such as bullet resistant vests can be custom fitted for high ballistic protection when wearing the ballistic protection the ballistic panels and hard rifle-resistant plates are fitted inside a special carrier which is the visible part of a ballistic vest some of the most basic carriers include pockets which hold the ballistic panels and straps for mounting the carrier on the user.

Some of the two major types of carriers include the military or tactical carriers that are worn over the shirt, and covert law enforcement type carriers that are worn under the shirt. Some ballistic fibers such as in Kevlar the slip is a critical part of the system because the slip prevents moisture from the user's body from saturating the ballistic materials this protects the life of the armor.

Bullet Proof Vests for Women

Women have the option of wearing protective clothing such as bullet proof vests that come in a variety of sizes, there are women who work as bounty hunters, or in law enforcement, special forces, the military as well as security guard jobs. This is a controversial law to allow civilians to buy them. I think of Columbine, the shooting at Virginia Tech. What if those kids.... Connecticut and NY see the potential.

The use of protective vests by law abiding civilians may well be a good idea, depending on where they live and the likelihood of encountering a significant threat. As a police officer, there are times I wear my vest under my civilian clothing.

We live in a dangerous world. If one feels better and safer wearing the vest, they should have the option of doing so. The average law abiding citizen is not a threat to the police. I am only concerned about the bad guys wearing them.
