It is an intriguing question. Does the fact that you don't have to concern yourself with items such as how much basic necessities cost, nor the basic luxuries, alter how you view life? While I think the stresses are about the same, the stressors themselves are vastly different.

In a fictional milieu, I think the movie "Trading Places" did a decent enough job of illustrating the difficulties inherent in our basic class system. While some mobility is possible, the worlds of the haves, the almost haves, the have somes, the have a littles, and the have nots are created and maintained by more than just a mindset.

CJ I agree, more than a mindset is the determining factor of economic status, if you are trying to improve and gain more than what you already have. Its time to change the way one thinks about what it really means to be successful.

CJ I agree, we tend to blame the victim for their status, even though of course we do impact our destiny. Still, I've known some people not to get off the couch to go to work, because they think it won't matter, won't be enough money, won't this or that.

My thought is always, what has brought that about? I think it's environment, learned helplessness, but also outside forces that are not within our control.

It's easy for the rich to sit and point fingers and say "You have what you deserve..." I watched a TV show once about a girl in New York who's husband left her, then she lost her job because she was upset, then she lost her house because she didn't have a job, then she and her child went to live with a friend and she was kicked out because her child cried, and then she was on the street, then she lost her child because she didn't have an address...then she got sick, and on and on it went.

It was horribly depressing to watch this person's live dissolve due to circumstances that were beyond her control. I kept wanting her to leave town, she orginially had the money. But, people stay in the "familiar." Hindsight is always 20/20.

Gosh, I feel another hub coming ....

Research Analyst, this is inspiring, good job...

Not being quite rich enough to buy all the luxuries you want, while still over-consuming in world terms, while still enduring no greater suffering than mal-contentism and envy - these are luxury problems. People in this group can espouse any crack-pot theory they like in the hope of getting the big break.

Living in the third world, under a dictator (Mr Mugabe comes to mind) through a famine or civil war, through 1000% inflation - this is not a luxury problem and it's going to take all of your wit to survive and glean your daily bread from somewhere.

People in category 1 above would do better thinking about those in category 2 than about themselves.

Everyone mindset is different. You can't really generalize how people think dividing them into rich and poor. Just as there are a great number of poor people with a successful mindset, trying to change their status right now, there are thousands of rich people who will be doomed to failure if it weren’t for the insane amount of money they were born with.

Hello Research Analyst:  I've had times of prosperity in my life (nice, big salaries) and times of struggle (unemployment or underemployment).  My experience during times of prosperity is that I wake up in the morning and wonder about things I would like to do, what movies to see, which restaurants to eat in, what to buy, what to plan for the months ahead, and yes, who I can help.  During those times, I have felt that my social circle has extended way beyond my close friends into colleagues and people who would like to have me as a client. That extended circle would lead to greater opportunities.

In times of struggle, I would wake up and wonder how to get through the day, how I would squeeze my budget to buy the things I needed and how I would manage to "lay low" so as not to overspend.  My circle would generally be limited to my closest friends and family, as colleagues and business associates would fall away.  The worst part of those down cycles:  The moments I remember thinking, "I'm running out of money" and visualizing my quality of life spiraling downward.  Let me tell you, that kind of thinking is a self-fulfilling prophesy.

I believe, as I see you do, that to become prosperous it's important to think rich and then live one's life in a positive frame of mind. On a different note, I agree with Paraglider's comments that we would be well served focusing on helping others. I think that is the richest mindset of all.

Rich people are rich because they do think differnently than poor people. They use their time and resources wisely in order to create wealth. But as for relating to poor people as being inferior, I would think that is more about one's character.

Mine seemed harsher than intended. Of course positive thinking can help, and within a group of say 100 business people, the positive thinkers will (on average) do best. But in the wider world, many really do have poverty thrust upon them in circumstances where they can't think themselves free of the situation. And, while no-one wishes for poverty, not everyone wishes for wealth.

This is a really good hub and one's mentality and their associations with others basically decide the path that their life takes. The Millionaire Mind is a book I will definitely check out now and have you read Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki? It's another great read.

pgrundy 3 years ago

I think in general its always good to have a positive attitude--it can't hurt. Knowing what you want is 99% of getting it though, and that's where I think a lot of people fall down. They're not sure what they want. Even if you can't have EVERYTHING you want, if you know what you want you can usually get some of it into your life.

Beyond that, lots of people inherit their money. I've met lots of rich people with bad attitudes who do not strike me as particularly smart or admirable, and I've met lots of poor people I adore who are just brilliant. Most people fall somewhere in the middle.

Money isn't everything. If you don't have lots of money, all it means is that you don't have lots of money. It doesn't mean a thing beyond that.

A lot of people who become stars just get lucky it appears and then become fantastically rich. For a lot of them this does not necessarily bring happiness because addictions, mental ill-health and even suicide are often the lot of such rich people. At the same time there are countless singers, bands, actors, writers, artists, sportspeople etc who have exceptional talent but it never gets recognised or financially rewarded. I think luck has a big part to play in this!

I agree that it is a mindset. Wealth is thoughts, not things. Circumstances can take it all away. But the truely wealthy in mind will gain it all back within a few years. How do I know this? I lived it.

"I watched a TV show once about a girl in New York who's husband left her, then she lost her job because she was upset" was the start of a sad story from one of the commentors. But this quote is the basis of the failure and decent into the abyss. This part caught my eye "because she was upset" This is a reaction, and it is 100% controlled by the person experiencing it. If this person would have looked for solutions instead of the mountain she was facing, she could have overcome it.

I have been through the divorce, the rejection, loss of children due to this problem, but with bad credit, no friends(funny how friends disappear when the money is gone), but with an attitude that i would have it all back soon, it started to happen again.

It is not a debate, it is a decision!

It's strange how people can think similarly, however, although they are in different circumstances. You can be poor but still motivated, and rich but still demoralized. Also, you may feel motivated or like spending money while you really don't have the resources to do so... that's dangerous! Good Hub.

I've seen plenty of people who thought like a rich person. The got those credit cards out, and they acted like a rich person, they charged without fear or consequences, believeing the universe would give them anything they wanted, because they were thinking like a rich person. Guess what, they are now bankrupt! I think the elite of the world want the rest of us to believe that wealth is simply the way you look at life...I think it has a lot more to do with who your parents and grandparents are. Of course if you work hard under the right circumstances, you might amass a fortune, look at Bill Gates. He was at the right place, at the right time, with the right idea. I am sure there were other guys out there just like him who are as poor as church mice, because they were not there at the right place at the right time. I think that getting rich also involves an element of luck.

jcorkern profile image

jcorkern 3 years ago

magnoliazz , The fact that someone acts like they are wealthy with credit cards is absolutely the opposite of a wealthy person. There is a difference between "Elite" and wealthy.

It has to do with attitude, let me give you an example. If you "magnoliazz" believe that spending money you have no way to repay, then you deserve what you get, just as anyone else does. But wealth is thoughts, not things, which is the appearance of wealth. Before you can have the trapping of wealth, you have to put into practise a wealthy mindset. For anything you do, you do based on your personal belief.

Someone who goes to get food stamps believes that it is a cure to their problem. the theif believes that his/her lack of cash can be fixed by theft. The wealthy believe that proper controll of money will make them independant.

Everyone actions are based on their beliefs, so it is knowing what you believe and acting on your beliefs.

Spending money that you do not have (credit cards) is not something the wealthy do without proper management. Money is a tool for the wealthy, not a slave master to the person.

Most of the wealthy that i know zero out their monthly ballance every month. They will only borrow to make more, not for consumables, like radios, cars, boats ect... because interest kills profits.

It is a matter of what you truely believe since most will act on their belief.

I remember a story about a tight rope walker that pushe a wheelbarrow across a river on a highline, when he finished, he asked the crowd if anyone believed he could go back across without falling on the way back. Several said "YES", so he asked the believers for a volunteer to ride back across in the wheelborrow, none would go.

So, did they really believe?

Research Analyst profile image

Research Analyst Hub Author 3 years ago

I agree jcorkern, the wealthy are not consumers, they are investors. They make money and use money to create wealth. Good exaple is you have people who work for a company as an employee, these are the workers. Then you have people who own the company, these are the owners. Then you have people who invest in the company. These are the investors. Who do you think will be the wealthy person? Think Warren Buffet!

So in the end, a penny saved is really a penny earned. It was this mindset that made the USA the richest country in the world. However, Americans are no longer very good savers. They have forgotten the lessons handed dowm from parents and grandparents who lived through the Depression. I am a direct rescipient of those values. While many many family farms ended up being sold, our family farms continue to be passed down from generation to generation. Wealth is accumullated and passed down to each generation and that is the way to go because you don't have to start from scratch. I always tell people to look to how the Amish live, we can all learn from them. They buy nothing on credit, you know if they come to buy your farm, they are carrying a check with them, out of their savings account. These are the lessons we have forgotten, and our country is going to be paying big time for that. We have to go back to the ways and thinking which built this country.

magnoliazz profile image

magnoliazz Level 2 Commenter 3 years ago

I have one more thing i would like to say. The biggest reason most people are in a financial bind in this country is because of DIVORCE! People get real stupid when they get involved in a divorce. Even if they start out friendly, the divorce lawyers will stir up ill will. There is a reason for this, the worse it gets, the more money these blood suckers get. People are getting smarter now, if they can't live together, it is better and cheaper to live in two seperate households( the eventual outcome anyhow) than it is to get a divorce. I think the average intelligent person can be decent enough to look at a marriage the same as a business arrangement if they need to. When you consider how much divorce lawyers take people for, it is a much better alternative to learn to get along and keep what money you have already accumulated. And, if you are in a nasty divorce, don't go for the juglar. I have seen many women wanting to make their husbands "pay" and the guy ends up being so broke that he cannot even have a life. This is just ridiculous, a little kindness and understanding can go a long way. People outgrow each other, and that should not be surprising to anyone. It is so much better to understand that, and protect the money you already have and come to some other solutions other than divorce. There is also another way wealth disappears from the average person. The average person in America no longer inherits very much like they used to. WHY? Because if mom or dad are getting older and they cannot take care of themselves, they end up in a nursing home. If your parents end up in a nursing home, at 5,000.00 a month, very little is left over, in fact many children are now having to borrow money to bury their elderly parents. Two ways to avoid this, if possible, take care of mom and dad yourself. It is often not as bad as people think and can be very rewarding. Years ago, there were no nursing homes, people were always taken care of by family. Often elderly parents can stay in your home until the last few months of life, and even then there are programs like hospice which helps with these situations. If it gets to be too much to care for a parent at home, consider getting someone who will come in a few days a week to babysit, you will still be money ahead in the end. Also, urge your parents to get some Nursing Home insurance. It is expensive, but if a nursing home is the only answer, at least this insurance will help pay for some of the expenses. The whole family needs to sit down and talk about these things, we always call it "keeping the money in the family" and believe me, it is a powerful wealth accumulater!

Magnoliazz, I can't understand from your posts - do you claim to be rich or poor? Or somewhere in between? :)

And I'm not sure that "penny saved penny earned" is the rich mindset. Saving and investing are altogether different animals. Investing involves risk management, and saving does not (well, not exactly, to be precise it just has the lowest possible risk, and the lowest - but almost guaranteed - reward)

Research Analyst profile image

Research Analyst Hub Author 3 years ago

The interesting thing about your comment Magnoliazz, is that if a person does not save money, encounters divorce or does not inherit money from their family it causes them not to be wealthy. Actually those are not the why. It is more about what are people doing right now to create wealth as individuals despite their current circumstance. The millionaire mind is for people who want to make a change in their current situations.

Misha -

LOL land rich, cash poor! Actually, my lifestyle is a whole lot different from the average person. Most people do not understand what farmers have to go through to keep their farms in this day and age. A farmer is a CEO of their own little domain, and just like any other business there are great rewards and great drawbacks too. We have a Christmas tree farm, we raise sheep, we rent organic garden plots, and we have even rasied mushrooms for awhile, all to keep the farms profitable and to be able to pay the taxes, up keep, and buying up more land. It is a big resposibility. I could sell out everything, and I would be set for life, but that is not how this family operates. The farms are held in trust for the next generation which will be my neice and nephew. In the 15 years that I have been on the farms, I have doubled their value by getting the land certified organic, which is going to be the next huge thing in farming. I am trying to buy up as much land as I can, then I have to leave it dormant for up to 10 years to get all the junk out of the soil so it can be certified organic. Oh sure, I could take that money and do other things with it, but I want to invest and grow this place for the next generation. Oh sure, I would love to go out and buy a new truck, but I will make due with my old clunker until it dies, and then I will replace it with a used vehicle. Around here, people frown on flashy or new anyhow, because many people who live in this area are thinking the way I do. Some are people from big cities who wanted a new way of life and could afford that. Some are the Amish, which I have learnes so much from. Others, like myself have been brought up on farms. We try to be very self sufficent.

Research Analyst

I am just saying that MOST Americans are not as well off as they could be due to divorce and not inheriting money, which they could have a hand in changing if they were a little less greedy and selfish. I understand all about thinking positive and taking risks, that is exactly what I have done with what I have now. However, there is always an element of pure luck involved with amassing money. Americans also need to start thinking different. Did you know ...in Europe, people save money for a house and pay in CASH! Wow, what a novel idea! If we had this mindset, America would not be in the trouble it is right now. If Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae go under it is going to get ugly. RA...this is a good hub, but it would be better if you address the issues that are going on with many Americans right now. The average American is not very well off financially, and as more and more jobs go overseas, more and more people are going to lose their jobs. Big business has let America down, and these are the wealthy people everyone is trying to emulate. I employ about 25-50 per season, and at least they don't have to worry about their jobs going overseas. I worry about each and every person I employ, and their families. Now, that is not the way the wealthy may think, in fact I know it is'nt, but that is what made this country what it is today, the little people and businesses out there sweating out a living.

With a very small investment, she was able to make her dreams come true, all because she was willing to work hard and believe in her dream. Also the fact you are turning your farm into certified organic is definitely what is needed. I agree with you when you mention about more focus should be placed on the state of our nation and those persons who are working hard to make a living despite of the failing economy. It certainly is something to think about.

Dear RA- I enjoyed this hub and all the discussion. You are an excellent writer. It is truly interesting to me to see how other people think and see if we have common ground. When it comes to wealth, I have been both very poor, and now to the point where I don't have to worry so much, however, I will never forget what I learned when I was down and out. As for organic farming, the time has come. We have been using pesticides, herbicides for only the last 50 years or so, and look at how the cancer rates are rising. I hope organic foods will bring down that cancer rate. It is not easy to go organic, but I would not feel right spraying. You would not even believe how much farmers spray crops. All that junk gets into the soil and into the ground water, and then what are we going to do? I want to change that. If I save just one person from a cancer death, to me it will be worth it.

Hi, just come across this hub and it is spot on to the question I have in mind. Just one question though, any suggestion on how to motivate one self to actually act on the "Rich mind set" of thinking? What I meant is that, Yeah sure you already had passed the Rich and poor set of thinking and now you have these ideas which you know will create you more wealth. How can you gather enough "push" to take the first step and conquer the fear of the unknown outcome?

Research Analyst profile image

Research Analyst Hub Author 3 years ago

Felipe, I believe motivation comes from what is "success" to the individual, along with having a mentor and making sure to keep association with positive, upbuilding people as friends. A daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly plan must be written down and applied regularly. It takes work just like anything worth having. Nothing is instant and just like with any goal it must become your life, what you eat and breath, as well as placing milestones to reach so you compete with yourself and not other people.

RA, it is interesting how many different paths this has gone.  Your presentation on how each tend to think appears to be basically correct.  There has been some divergence in the comments.  You were speaking of financial wealth.  Several others have commented on non-financial matters.

So both can be correct.  Financial wealth is not the same as success.  In my opinion Mother Theresa was a success, and I know of many others in ministry or human service who have found great success, but not financial wealth.  Likewise there are many other personal measurements of wealth.  A mother and father with 8 children many consider the children themselves as wealth.  A person who lives simply in a beautiful natural environment and is quite content can certainly claim that this is wealth.

When it comes to strictly financial wealth, there are many factors which may contribute to one's position.  Inheritance, being hit with severe illness and extensive medical bills, fantasitc success as an athlete or actor, level of education, specific skills, etc.  However, for those who have achieved financial success through their own efforts and actions, your article is pretty accurate.

I have heard that many financial experts say that if all the wealth in the nation was divided equally among all the people, within just a year or two most people would be pretty much back to where they were before the re-distribution.  As a student of business and economics, and observer of people for about 50 years, I think that is true.

Jim 3 years ago

Wealth is about mindset and procedure.

1. Create a goal

2. Hold a vision of the end result

3. Start a business

4. Adjust the business

5. Be persistant, and go over all obstacles

6. Once capital starts to roll in above original investment, accumulate that money in a secure investment, do not spend it.

So, it's really about creating a vision, beginning, and holding to the vision through all the obstacles and things that happen in life. This includes illness, divorce, family issues, business issues, bad economy, accidents, etc., etc. etc.

The mental part comes in because people need to realize you create your tomorrow today. Where you are today is just the starting point. If you do not create something different, your tomorrow will look like today. So you don't dispair about today or yesterday, you get a vision of tomorrow, and hold to it. You need to persist in your vision, and your tomorrows will begin to resemble your vision. This includes wealth.

Co-sign. Very good advice. I am looking to improve the quality of my life as well. My blog "Section 8 to Bentley" gives insight as to how to adapt a mind set different from the one imposed on me in my childhood.

Wow....no one is dealing with reality.....thinking this or that, saving this or that....wow what a joke, all of you are really funny folks. Cheating, free labor, stealing, lieing and killing is the foundation of our great rich country and any wealthy country around the world. The history of the great ones of wealth you may want to read up on and be amazed at what really took place and keeps the wealthy in their position of riches and power.

prasadjain, this is because my original article someone copied it and so I had to rewrite the whole hub which by then had lost all my inspirational points.
