Food Inspector Job Description

food and Drug Inspector Inspects establishment where foods, drugs, cosmetics, and similar consumer items are manufactured, handled, stored, or sold to enforce legal standards of sanitation, purity, and grading:

Other duties include visiting specified establishments to investigate sanitary conditions and health and hygiene habits of persons handling consumer products.

As a food inspector you will collects samples of products for bacteriological and chemical laboratory analysis. Informs individuals concerned of specific regulations affecting establishments.

As you may be aware you will destroys subgrades, or prohibits sale of impure, toxic, damaged, or misbranded items. Questions, employees , vendors, consumers, and other principals to obtain evidence for prosecuting violators.

It is important that you as a food inspector ascertains that the required licenses and permits have been obtained and are displayed.

Also as a food inspector you will prepare reports on each establishment visited, including findings and recommendations for action. May negotiate with marketers and processors to effect changes in facilities and practices, where undesirable conditions are discovered that are not specifically prohibited by law.

Although it may not be required you may end up grading products according to specified standards along with testing products, using variety of specialized test equipment, such as ultraviolet lights and filter guns.

Lastly as a food inspector you may investigate compliance with or violation of public sanitation laws and regulations and be designated Sanitary Inspector.

Produce Inspection Training Program

United Fresh & the USDA have partnered to bring the industry the "Produce Inspection Training Program." This specialized training course is developed into two courses:

  • Introduction to Produce Inspection and Advanced Produce Inspection.
  • The introductory course is a classroom based program that covers the fundamentals of produce inspections such as grading, standards, tolerances, PACA, and sampling procedures. The Introductory course as a pre-requisite to the Advanced course.

The 3-day advanced course focuses on hands-on commodity inspections in the lab. Each advanced course includes inspection of the five most commonly requested commodities: Grapes, Lettuces, Potatoes, Strawberries, and Tomatoes.
