Motorcycle Helmet Buying Guide

How to pick the right helmet for your needs depend on if you are a new motorcycle rider and how much riding you do and the type of sports bike and recreation you will be involved in.

  • Will the helmet restrict your vision?
  • Does the helmet reduce your hearing?
  • How much does the helmet weigh?
  • What materials are the helmet made out of?

Most motorcycle helmets have two principal protective components, one being a thin, hard, outer shell typically made from polycarbonate plastic, fiberglass, or Kevlar. second being a soft, thick, inner liner usually made of expanded polystyrene or polypropylene foam.

As it has been recommended the purpose of the hard outer shell is to prevent penetration of the helmet by a pointed object that might otherwise puncture the skull, as well as provide structure to the inner liner since the foams used have very little resistance to penetration or abrasion it won't disintegrate upon abrasive contact with pavement.

The foam liner is to crush during an impact, thereby increasing the distance and period of time over which the head stops and reducing its deceleration.

Helmet Construction

Most helmets are constructed from plastics and some are reinforced with kevlar or carbon fiber, and generally have fabric and foam interiors for both comfort and protection, when it comes to motorcycle helmets which are generally designed to break in a crash expending the energy they provide little or no protection after their first impact.

Especially when impacts occur from things other than crashing, such as dropping a helmet, which at first may not cause any externally visible damage. Harley Davidson is a brand that is known for its quality and well made construction of helmets and motorcycle accessories.

It is best to replace helmets after any impact, as well in the case of every three or so years even if no impact is known to have occurred because all protective helmets attempt to protect the user's head by absorbing mechanical energy and protecting against penetration.

What is not commonly known is that motorcycle helmets structure and protective capacity are altered in high-energy impacts. Also the energy-absorption capability, the volume and weight are also important because higher volume and weight increase the injury risk for the user's head and neck that is why anatomical helmets were invented to adapt to the inner head structure.

Helmet History

In history helmets were worn by Romans, throughout the Middle Ages, up to the 1600s. Many combatants of military equipment to protect the head from blows, swords, arrows, and low-velocity musket fire and with some helmets having a pteruges to protect the neck.

Also helmets were first made of leather, bronze and iron and later from forged steel after about 950A.D. military use of helmets declined, so by the 18th century cavalry units, protected themselves with steel cuirasses, also known as skull protectors under hats for combat protection. Helmets with pads act as a suspension system providing sizing and fitting in conjunction with the shell, providing impact protection with the chinstrap retention system, for stability.
