Printed Circuit Board Repair

By

What is printed circuit board repair?

The most common method for circuit board repair involves eutectic or Pb-free solder repairing or reworking a printed circuit board.

Starts with a good thermal profile and, having a solder ball grid array of drilling out a plated-through hole to sever electrical connections between a ball grid array pad.

Then there is the removing of failed components on one surface of the printed circuit board and internal circuits.

Cleaning and preparing, and removing rust or solder residues on circuits on an opposite surface of the printed circuit board where component is replaced with new flux and solder and re-flow is performed which leads to the inspection.

Solder Ball Grid Array

Next it is necessary to insert a pin having an insulated sleeve surrounding a portion of it into the drilled-out hole, with the pin having attached to one end a wire for attachment to the ball grid array on one surface of the printed circuit board and a post at the other end of the pin for attachment of a wire to the post, what you will notice is the pin has a stop along its length to control vertical positioning of the pin in the drilled-out hole.

Via Replacement Pin

As you may be aware the pin is referred to as a via replacement (VR) pin. What you will find is that most after the plated through hole is drilled out, an insulated wire may be inserted into the hole with insulation removed from the length of the wire which extends beyond one surface of the printed circuit board.

It is important that the bare length of wire is bent parallel to the surface of the printed circuit board and attached by a solder reflow process while the wire is formed around a pad on the surface of the printed circuit board which receives the solder ball.

PCB Board Repair Kits

With printed Circuit Board Kits you can do fast repair and modification of lands, traces, contact fingers, SMT pads, plated hole connections and PCB base board material.

Circuit Trace Repair is modification of circuit traces, while Base Board Repair Kit allow you to  replace damaged board corners, edges and holes this is possible with color agents that are  added to the epoxy system in order to make it look like the original board.

Most kits come with the following:

  • Epoxy Kit with resin/hardner,
  • orangewood sticks to assist with forming and bending traces for easy placement,
  • a stainless steel dental pick

Land Repair Kit allow for repair lifted or damaged lands on circuit board, while the Pad Repair Kit include:

  • useable replacement land patterns circuit frames,
  • professional stainless steel tweezers,
  • precision knife,
  • Resin/Hardner,
  • Orangewood sticks

Through-holes or vias can be damaged in the handling of PCB’s or through the improper removal, so the Hole Repair Kit comes with a device large number of flat flange eyelets in a good variety of sizes, replacement of eyelets can be done with professional stainless steel tweezers to grab and hold the eyelets while you are replacing or repairing plated through-holes.

PCB Assembly Procedures

First basic PCB assembly procedures covers handling, cleaning, coatings, legend, and use of epoxies. Base board, conductor, plated hole Jumper Wires, Component Modification, Soldering, BGA rework.

  • Base Board repair includes delamination, warp, key slots, non plated holes, surface defects, and various defects to base board material and jumper wire procedures.
  • Conductor repair includes rework of conductors including circuits, lands, gold contacts, surface mount pads, and BGA pads.
  • Plated Hole repair includes various methods for plated hole repair.
  • Jumper Wires and Component Modification Procedures include adding jumper wires and performing various component modifications as well as soldering and desoldering procedures.
  • Soldering include soldering a variety of component types including chip components, J lead components and gull wing components.
  • Rework is for BGA Rework and removing and replacing BGA components.
